Social Housing

Yukon Housing Corporation's social housing program is for individuals, families and seniors "in need" who cannot secure affordable, adequate and suitable housing on the private housing market. Low cost rental housing stock exists in Whitehorse and nine rural Yukon communities. Social housing unit rent is 25% of total household income before deductions.

Social housing decisions are made on the basis of applicant need and unit availability. At the local level, these decisions are the responsibility of the local Community Housing Boards or the Whitehorse Housing Authority, as applicable. Housing Managers operating out of the local community Housing Offices are responsible for the day-to-day administration of the local social housing program.

As of January 2007, Yukon Housing Corporation has introduced changes to its policies on how applicants for social housing are assessed.

These amendments are to recognize that some applicants have needs and situations that distinguish them from other applicants. As noted in the 2004 report: Evaluation of the Social Housing Program, the Yukon’s demographic is changing due to an aging population while other contributing factors may influence those seeking social housing services. These influences include; rural seniors seeking housing for medical reasons; victims of violence and abuse seeking accommodation away from abusers and those experiencing mobility challenges in their existing accommodations.
